IndependenceThere is a saying that states, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance," which calls
for us to be conscious and aware of any dangers to our freedom. This saying is not only about external threats but must also
be applied internally. It is up to us to act in ways that limit the effects of our ego and maximize the impulse of our true
nature. Before we can do that another question must be asked. "What is the price to become free in the first place?"
How do we move past our fear in order to move into our freedom? The founding fathers of th United
States were brave people. They were the rich and powerful of their era and yet they risked everything they had for a principal.
They realized that money and influence were not enough if the price was their freedom. Of course they were not perfect people.
Many owned slaves and discriminated by sex, race and creed and yet they could see that their freedom and their nation's
freedom was of paramount importance. It is a blight on this country's history that they did not define freedom to include
all men and women in all the States. However, their sacrifice and courage led the way to the
freedoms we enjoy today. We must pick up the torch, follow their lead and declare our own independence. We must act in the
face of fear, despite fear, and give up our self imposed subjugation. If we feel that life is somehow not what we want then
it is up to us to listen to that whisper and act, courageously, quickly and without hesitation. There were no guarantees of
victory when the Declaration of Independence was issued but the choice was clear, continue down the same road or try something
totally new. I put forth that we, as individuals, as a nation and as a world must try something new.
The interesting thing about the word independence is that it is a recognition that we are in dependence. We are not alone
in this world. We need our friends and families for support. As the Unites States needed France to succeed, we need our friends
and family to support us in our great endeavor to throw off the yoke of our ego. Likewise, we must recognize our interaction
and inter-being with all people and with mother nature. Our true self, knows what is for our highest good and it is up to
us to listen and act on that intuitive wisdom. So this year, this day, this moment, declare your intent to be free of the
ego's subjugation and avow your independence. A bell always rings true. Let your life be a bell and let freedom ring.
